soft thoughts for a rainy friday

Nothing fancy, something short.

I’ve been consumed a lot by work at my new job these last few weeks, so truly haven’t been consuming much consciously. Anyway, here are some scattered soft thoughts this afternoon.

the start of a short story i want to work on: In the summer, when we fell in love, the cicadas shed their skin. The hollow caskets of their nymph bodies were littered across the sidewalks, making soft crunches, everywhere you stepped. If i went back to school for my MFA or just decided to focus on writing short stories again, i think i’d collect them together in a series based on geography of love, filling each section with short love stories (or lack of love stories) written based on that place.

  • Forest Grove, Oregon

  • Albuquerque, New Mexico

  • Big Bend, Texas

  • Austin, Texas (again and again and again)

This season of survivor is dreadfully boring, resulting in me skipping multiple episodes and forgetting that this show exists.

The Left Hand of Darkness is Good

I don’t know why it took me so long to actually read an Ursula K. Le Guin book. Probably because I have hangups about reading fantasy, sci-fi, or speculative fiction books. There’s nothing original I can say about The Left Hand of Darkness, but I will say reading three of her books in a row, it’s clear that she has some attachment to geography and it’s impact on growth.

In the three books I’ve read, all of her characters are forced to find themselves or rediscover their identity through interaction in a barren wasteland. In Wizard of Earthsea, the primary character must journey to the ends of the literal world, crossing hazardous waters and strange terrain, in Tombs of Atuan, someone must venture through literal darkness, in Left Hand of Darkness, the character must cross the baren glacial wasteland, literally through a patch of unpenetrable and unbearable light before they are allowed to succeed.

I’m still forming opinions on God of War Ragnarok

What I will say is that Thor1 somehow looks like every man I find attractive or fall in love with and i’m sure that says something about me, so if you have more insight, please let me know!

I wanted the Midnight Club to better than it was

I get the target audience for this show is probably different than the last couple of shows by Mike Flanagan, but ultimately this was such a dud. Maybe it’s because Midnight Mass was such a masterful and satisfying show to watch that I was too expectant of yet another midnight-named show premiering at Halloween.
