A sentence (or two) on the top 30 songs on my Spotify top songs of 2022
Begging for rain
I’m obsessed with the opening stanza: the more you wait, the more you break/the longer that it takes to undo/all the knots that you’ve been tying/on cherry stems and black barbed wire too.
I think it’s this brilliant positioning of light with dark, heavy with light-hearted and sets the tone for an album that explores how much of yourself you have to break to truly discover who you are.
Alaska
I keep thinking about the pattern of my own life and wondering if you can actually ever grow or change or if change has to be wrenched out of you from tragedy.
That’s where I am
I’m actually surprised this is my number 3, i don’t feel like i listened to it that much.
Lonesome love
I’m not surprised this is my number 4, I listen to this three-four times a week. I should probably go back to therapy and talk about it.
First time
This stanza gives me goosebumps when I hear it: But you can't feel it for the first time, a second time/You can't feel it for the first time, a second time/I can't go back to who I was before I met you/I can't undo what I've done, I wouldn't want to/I wouldn't want to, I wouldn't want to.
These days
I admit I listened to this solely because it was a tik tok meme for a while. But it’s so good, you just have to.
The only heartbreaker
99% chance that Mitski has never been the only heartbreaker in her relationships and maybe a 55% chance that I haven’t as well.
Going going gone
Lucy Dacus’ voice here is just really good.
Orange
I’ve been thinking more and more about the devastating end coming to us all at the hands of climate change so this naturally goes with that.
Break my soulJust a great bop, what’s not to love. I would very much like to quit my job and never work again!
Love me more
I think the lyrics “I need you to love me more, love me more, love me more, love enough to fill me up” fully describes my particular brand of loneliness.
Hot & heavyI’ll admit that I’ve cried to this line: “You were always stronger than people suspected
Underestimated and overprotected” multiple times.
In Hell
Pretty sure the lyric “Where no-one ever tells you just how clinical death looks” is one of the most original and thoughtful takes on death i’ve heard in a long while.
Alien superstarAgain, another bop.
Should’ve been me
Of the songs on Mitski’s new album, im surprised to find this one listened to this much. It was good, but not top listen…
VBS
The riff that comes right after the line “there’s nothing you can do but the only thing you found, playing slayer at full volume helps to block it out” has caused me hearing loss.
What else can I do?
Another song that burrowed its way into my brain because of Tik Tok
Virgo’s groove
Baby, come over (baby, come over) Come be alone with me tonightttttttt
First love/late spring
I have a very particular image of this song and if I could illustrate better I would make a comic where this is playing in the background over a personal narrative. I’ve tried before but it’s never looked right.
Brando
“All I need for you to admit. Is that you never knew me like you thought you did. You never knew me like you thought you did. Like you thought you did” Occupies too much of by brain for an almost 30 year old man.
Future me hates me
I feel like i only listen to this mid-way through a manic episode?
Silk chiffon
Full girlypop.
Christine
I don’t even like this song that much so really not sure how it go up so far. But it is a kinda touching song about lost love?
Monsters
I swore that this is a trans song because the of the line “I am the girl that I thought I outgrew” but I guess that’s again another reminder that the narrator =/= author.
Cuff it
I feel like fallin' in love (fallin' love)
I'm in the mood to fuck something up (tonight, I'm fucking something up, baby)
I need some drink in my cuppppppppp
Stunted
I might have personal past attachments to Remember Sports, but I also earnestly believe they have some of the sharpest lyrics. Like so much is said so simply and I think that’s a really rare treat. Also who doesn’t feel like they’re emotionally stunted?
Believe, Lucy DacusHonestly, this is a top cover of Believe. Almost as good as the original.

Don’t say you love me
Zach played this once and I listened to it on repeat for I swear a week solid.
Horses
Me imagining im on some farm watching horses galavant around open pastures while rocking on my front porch.
Out loud
“It's not a secret that I'm lonely, even when I'm in a crowd. Will you tell me what you're thinking?
You know you can't be so proud” I thought fully summed me up, then the lyric “And I won't stop, never give up, trying to get everything out” came up and I was like, Nah that’s really me in the worst way possible.
